Mayfield’s Rebuild Gains Momentum with Makerspace, Industrial Growth

April 07, 2025

Graves County, KY — Downtown Mayfield and the surrounding Graves County region are entering a new phase of redevelopment, with major projects underway that focus on entrepreneurship, industrial growth, and long-term resilience.

Jason Lemle, President of Graves County Economic Development and Director of the Mayfield Industrial Development Authority, shared updates on these initiatives in a recent episode of Sprocket’s What’s the Startup?! podcast.

Community-Led Vision Sparks Downtown Makerspace

One of the most anticipated developments is a community makerspace, which Lemle described as “a multi-use facility for woodworking, metalworking, 3D printing, t-shirt embroidery and printing as well.” He added, “It’ll be a membership-based business and it’s for community trades and skilled people to come in and grow their business—hopefully in time to a company—and stay in Mayfield and Graves County.”

Rebuilding from the Ground Up — Literally

The project, which is backed by grant funding from the Economic Development Administration, was inspired by a series of community input sessions held after the December 2021 tornado. “The experience started in March of ‘22,” Lemle said. “The city called together a meeting at the high school, inviting all community personnel to come in and put their ideas on what they wanted to see Mayfield look like if it was reimagined.”

The group’s recommendation? Support entrepreneurship and create a space where makers and small businesses could thrive.

Graves County Industrial Park Expansion Underway

In addition to the makerspace, Graves County is expanding its industrial park, with infrastructure projects that include road access and a large spec building. “We’ll have a 500,000 square foot pre-graded pad with new road access in and out of the park,” Lemle said. “We’ll be completing a 150,000 square foot spec building, and there should be some unique and pretty cool announcements coming up about some new business opportunities that have never been a part of Mayfield or Graves County before.”

These efforts reflect a broader push to attract new industries, support the local workforce, and reimagine downtown development with updated building standards and cohesive design. “We want a more seamless look in that area to attract good quality jobs and good quality businesses and make sure that the downtown really recovers,” Lemle noted.

A Vision for the Next Generation

At the heart of it all is a long-term vision—not just for buildings and businesses, but for the people of Graves County. “I want to see my daughter, your daughter, your son, my friends’, families’, and kids’—an opportunity to walk up and down the devastated streets of Mayfield and Graves County one day and be proud to see what we did to rebuild it,” Lemle said.
